The "LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!" Video (English Version)

The "LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!" video is a twenty-three (23) minute piece designed to stimulate dialogue around helping HIV positive individuals make informed decisions about treatment options. Though part of the "Life Is What YOU Make It!" campaign, the video and discussion guide have been designed as stand-alone products which can educate and empower people living with AIDS (PLWHAs). We watch as characters grapple--sometimes successfully, sometimes, not--with their choices about HIV treatment and their lives in general. During the course of the video, the characters discuss the many issues which complicate the treatment of PLWHAs: limited financial resources and access to adequate medical care; little or no family support; struggles with substance abuse; self-identity/self esteem, substance abuse, stress management, to name a few. These scenarios illustrate many of the issues and challenges, which PLWHAs face in dealing with their life and medical choices. The drama takes an insider's look at the paths of the members as they grapple with a number of issues, which reflect their diversity and realities. These social interactions are depicted in a realistic, authentic manner, which other PLWHAs will be able to recognize and relate to.

HIV Awareness Children's Book

Valerie Reeder-Bey is a wife, mother, and grandmother living with AIDS. In the late 1980s, when she learned that she was HIV positive, Valerie went home and told her mother, hoping for support, understanding, and a comforting hug. Instead, Valerie's mother pushed her away - based on fear and lack of knowledge about the disease. Seeing a need to spread awareness and information instead of panic and fear, Valerie started using her illness as an opportunity to educate others. With her granddaughter, Annisha Monica Wilburn, Valerie has written a children's book, My Grandma Has AIDS: Annisha's Story, to help kids understand that it is safe to live with, kiss, and hug someone you love who is affected with HIV.
